Reykjavík and Iceland travel guide

Reykjavík is the base for most Iceland trips: a small, colourful capital close to geothermal lagoons, waterfalls, geysers and glaciers. Summer brings near-endless daylight; winter brings the chance of northern lights.

Best time to visit Iceland

June to August has mild weather, open highland roads and daylight almost around the clock. It is the busiest season.

From roughly September to April, dark skies make the northern lights possible on clear nights. Winter days are short and some roads close in storms.

Getting to Iceland

International flights land at Keflavík (KEF), about 50 km from Reykjavík. Airport buses and rental cars connect it with the city. There are direct flights from several US cities.

Getting around

Rental car

Driving gives the most freedom, including the Ring Road around the island. In winter, check road and weather conditions (road.is and vedur.is) before every drive.

Day tours

Coach and minibus tours from Reykjavík cover the Golden Circle, the south coast and northern lights hunts without winter driving.

In Reykjavík

The centre is small and walkable; city buses cover the rest.

Practical tips

  • Weather changes fast; pack waterproof layers even in summer.
  • Never drive off-road: it is illegal and damages fragile moss and soil.
  • Tap water is excellent and safe to drink, so bring a refillable bottle.
