Greece travel guide
Greece is usually two trips in one: ancient sites in Athens and the mainland, then island-hopping by ferry through the Cyclades or the Ionian islands.
Best time to visit Greece
May, June, September and early October offer warm sea temperatures with fewer crowds than midsummer.
July and August are hot and the busiest months on the islands. From November to March many island hotels and ferry routes close or run less often.
Getting to Greece
Athens International Airport (ATH) is the main gateway. Santorini (JTR), Mykonos (JMK), Crete (HER, CHQ) and Corfu (CFU) receive direct flights from many European cities in summer.

Getting around
Ferries
Ferries to the Cyclades leave mainly from Piraeus and Rafina near Athens. Fast boats are quicker; conventional ferries are cheaper and less affected by wind.
Domestic flights
Short flights from Athens reach most larger islands in under an hour.
On the islands
Local buses connect main villages; renting a car, ATV or scooter gives more freedom.
