Thailand travel guide
Thailand mixes big-city Bangkok, temple-filled Chiang Mai in the north and hundreds of islands in two seas. This guide covers when to go, how to move between regions and the experiences most first-time visitors plan around.
Best time to visit Thailand
November to February is the cool, dry season and the most popular time for most of the country. March to May is the hottest stretch, especially in Bangkok and the north.
The rainy season runs roughly June to October. It hits the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi) hardest, while the Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) get most of their rain from about October to December.
Getting to Thailand
Most long-haul flights land at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) handles many low-cost regional flights. Phuket (HKT), Chiang Mai (CNX) and Koh Samui (USM) also have international connections.

Getting around
In Bangkok
The BTS Skytrain and MRT metro cover most central areas and avoid the traffic. Chao Phraya river boats are an easy way to reach the Grand Palace area. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab are widely used.
Between cities
Domestic flights are the fastest option. Overnight sleeper trains run from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, and long-distance buses connect most towns.
To the islands
Ferries and speedboats link Phuket and Krabi with Phi Phi and the Andaman islands, and Surat Thani/Chumphon with the Gulf islands. Combined bus-and-boat tickets are common.

Thailand travel FAQ
What is the best month to visit Thailand?
For most of the country, November to February offers the driest and least hot weather. If you are heading to the Gulf islands such as Koh Samui, avoid roughly October to December, their wettest period.
How many days do you need in Thailand?
A week covers Bangkok plus one beach area. Ten days to two weeks lets you add Chiang Mai in the north or a second island group.
How do you get from Bangkok to the islands?
The quickest way is a short flight to Phuket, Krabi or Koh Samui, then a ferry or speedboat if your island has no airport. Buses and trains combined with ferries are cheaper but take most of a day.
