Best time to visit Japan

Spring (late March to April, cherry blossom season) and autumn (October to November, autumn leaves) are the most popular times, with mild weather.

June brings the rainy season to much of the country, and July and August are hot and humid. Winter is cold but clear in Tokyo and good for skiing in Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps.

Getting to Japan

Tokyo has two international airports: Haneda (HND), closer to the city, and Narita (NRT). Osaka Kansai (KIX) is convenient if your trip starts in Kyoto or Osaka.

Getting around

IC cards

Rechargeable IC cards such as Suica and PASMO (or their mobile versions) work on trains, subways and buses in most big cities and at many convenience stores.

Shinkansen

Bullet trains link Tokyo with Kyoto and Osaka in under three hours. Reserved seats can be booked in advance online or at stations.

Rail passes

Nationwide and regional rail passes exist. Whether they save money depends on your route, so compare the pass price with individual tickets.
