Iceland in 8 days: the Ring Road road trip
A full loop of Iceland on Route 1: waterfalls, black-sand beaches, icebergs, fjords and geothermal fields. It is a road trip, so you need a rental car and about 1,330 km of driving.
When to go
June to August has open roads and nearly 24-hour daylight, the easiest time for the Ring Road. September is quieter; in winter (northern lights season) the full loop depends on the weather, and a shorter South Coast trip is safer.

Tips for this trip
- Book the car early for summer; check road conditions daily at road.is and the weather at vedur.is.
- Fuel stations can be far apart in the east; fill up when you can.
- Do not walk past the warning signs at Reynisfjara; the waves there are dangerous.

Is 8 days enough for the Ring Road?
It is the minimum for the full loop; 10 days gives you shorter driving days.
Do I need a 4x4?
Not for Route 1 in summer. The highland F-roads need a 4x4 and are only open in summer.
Can I do it in winter?
Sometimes, but storms can close roads. Many winter visitors stay on the South Coast instead.
